Good morning Ashley & Everyone!

So this is an advanced course but not like Q2 for reviewers, correct?
Daniel Soodjinda
18:47
I wonder if the FLC I’m doing this year, such intersects anti-racist teaching with QLT objectives could someday also be an advanced course option.
Daniel Soodjinda

How are campuses explaining to faculty the difference between "remote instruction" and an "online course?" I have tried explaining this in webinars, but all faculty do not get this. They would think they all have a "fully online course" already due to pandemic
Catherine Hillman SLO
20:57
Beverly, this is a tricky one. I describe the process of developing an online course, and compare that to the “Covid conversion” approach we took. I’ve also said it’s the difference between going to a zoo on a normal day, and going to the zoo on the day that all the animals escaped and are eating the spectators.
Catherine Hillman SLO
21:22
(I may have some personal bitterness associated with that analogy...)
Deb Perry
21:30
lol @catherine great metaphor!
Sheryl Hathaway
21:33
We have the policy definitions and we are creating a course checklist of the QM 3 pt standards
Kathy Arnold
21:37
Hahaha!
Kim Vincent-Layton - HSU
21:59
@Catherine love that!
Anne Choi CSUDH
22:09
Any chance for any course over the winter break? WE have had requests
Beverly Bondad-Brown
22:20
But to them, they still went to the zoo?? LOL
Catherine Hillman SLO
22:57
They had to - outside of the zoo there was this pandemic....
Catherine Hillman SLO
23:08
:-D
Beverly Bondad-Brown
24:05
@Sheryl, what is your policy definition of online vs remote instruction?
Beverly Bondad-Brown
24:33
@Catherine, have you given that analogy to a Philosophy faculty? LOL
Sheryl Hathaway

Beverly Bondad-Brown
25:32
@Sheryl, thanks!
Anne Choi CSUDH
25:55
Ok
Catherine Hillman SLO
26:15
@Beverly no, and honestly the other scenario I use is “think of visiting a hospital on a ‘normal’ day, and think of visiting one during Covid.” In other words, what they are seeing of online teaching is just not normal, and a system under circumstances that were not part of the design. I’m sure there’s a better analogy out there, but I live 1/2 mile from a zoo, so that’s where my brain goes :-)
Catherine Hillman SLO
27:21
Ashley, can you make the page a bit bigger?
CSUCI -Megan Eberhardt-Alstot
28:20
Here’s a link to the decision tree: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/156IJF_dq0Ns5TxAfnYa6YS8M9VrpdHEWhVeoGS3KPgk/edit

29:04
you might need to see it in full screen
Catherine Hillman SLO
29:23
@Mark thank you - I thought you were telling Ashley - I found it :-D
Beverly Bondad-Brown
29:35
@Catherine, I was being a bit sarcastic but thanks for the metaphors.
Beverly Bondad-Brown
29:56
@Sheryl, based on your policy, everyone who is teaching remotely WOULD think they have an "online class"

Bev, There is an update pending from our academic senate.
Sheryl Hathaway
43:01
We are using a Course Readiness Checklist of QM 3 pt standards as the "next step" for those who have "met" Alternative Modes of Instruction (AMI).
Mark Laumakis - SDSU
43:43
Sheryl, could you share that checklist?
Mark Laumakis - SDSU
45:02
I've been reading The Checklist Manifesto and I'm kind of obsessed with checklists right now. I am very curious about the utility of very brief checklists that faculty could reference to get up and running.
Bradford Owen
46:01
@Catherine, does the zoo metaphor, suggest that normally students are caged for the viewing pleasure of the faculty, and that in the pandemic the students are now devouring the faculty? :D
Chiara Ferrari - Chico State
46:41
Thanks for this work, Ashely, having actual examples, that are searchable (ideally) would help tremendously
Chiara Ferrari - Chico State
49:11
thanks
Catherine Hillman SLO
49:38
@Bradford I think I was projecting some inner frustration at faculty who were telling me how bad online teaching was based on Covid conversions. In my head, they were being eaten by tigers as I was smiling and calmly explaining the difference XD
Catherine Hillman SLO
51:05
@Mark I created this Course Launch Task List with check boxes for our faculty last spring - if you have a google docs account, you can download a copy & modify it. I made it so the items get grayed out & checked off when you check a box :-D
