Hi!

Academic Affairs asked that we develop the next phase of training to prepare faculty to teach in different modalities Fall 2021. The Chancellor’s Office hired a consultant to create a training program that would address both the needs of faculty and students for fall 2021, but also provide a framework for flexible course design in the event of other shifts in instruction (i.e. natural disasters). We had 49 participants in summer 2021 for transitioning and leveraging things we learned through virtual teaching toward flexible pedagogy, design, engagement, and assessment (18 – 22 hrs.) Also, we had 36 participants in the workshops providing pedagogical and training to deliver live & online modality (10 – 12 hrs.)
Chiara Ferrari - Chico
25:02
I am having a really hard time in Chico with faculty participation. We have an open call for the 5 QLT workshops we offer, and only 3 people have applied. I sent out a survey yesterday to all faculty (I’m the Director of Faculty Development) and the responses so far show very little bandwidth for PD opportunities
Shradha Tibrewal, Stanislaus
29:16
We at Stanislaus are staying virtual till October 1, which while being super appreciated, is also more work and exhausting for faculty who needed to pivot back to online
Shradha Tibrewal, Stanislaus
30:08
@Chiara, Hi! We are in a similar boat with faculty participation.
Brad Owen, CSUSB
30:10
CSUSB: 2021 Summer Virtual Teaching Institute had 30 faculty participants, 25 of whom took Q1 or Q3 and will then develop a quality online course based on the QLT Core 22 instrument (stipend $1,000). We are planning similar programs for Fall and Spring which we hope will yield at least 40 participants per term.
Beverly Bondad-Brown
30:21
Cal State LA – We have transitioned to 3 options of our Online Course Development Program (https://www.calstatela.edu/cetl/online-course-development-program). Faculty can 1) go through our in-house course development program then do a peer review; 2) take QM’s IYOC and do a peer review or 3) go through QM Preparatory Review. We are also building a cadre of peer reviewers to assist with these.
Roger Wen - CSUEB
31:18
CSUEB: About 40%+ on ground but more courses are now co-sync instead of on ground. Use some of the HEER fund for faculty training during summer (summer institute) and co-sync training total about 130 faculty attended). Also using the funding for other quality transformation grants with 40+ faculty participating should be done by the end of January. As part of that quality transformation grants, we had about 30+ faculty join our DYOC training last month.
Brad Owen, CSUSB
31:28
CSUSB: Also during summer, about 160 of our classrooms on the San Bernardino and Palm Desert Campuses were upgraded to "Next Generation Smart Classrooms," with state-of-the-art ceiling-mounted microphone, ceiling-mounted PTZ camera, podium-mounted control panel, document camera, and webcam. Principle intended use is for faculty to teach both on-site and synchronous remote students equally well cosynchronously. The remaining 120 classrooms will be completed by January. We are training faculty to use these rooms in our NGSC Cosynchronous Teaching Program, in which (currently 170) faculty participants do 90 min of on-site training with the equipment and two self-guided Canvas courses, "Best Practices in Cosynchronous Teaching" and "Essentials of Teaching With Canvas" (stipend $1,500).
Michelle Dang - Sac State
31:50
At Sac State, we had a busy summer with QM workshops. Over 70 faculty completed APPQMR or IYOC and 10 became QM peer reviewers. We are offering IYOC and APPQMR faculty learning communities in the fall and doing course reviews. We certified 2 courses over summer.

(I’m not going on video this morning, sorry!) Cal Poly SLO update - we spent this summer teaching hybrid/blended pedagogy in online workshops, as well as shepherding lots of courses through the change of modality process. We’re seeing a lot of interest in making the online courses a permanent part of our offerings, which is incredibly exciting. We start our term in 2 weeks (quarter system) so we’re watching what happens at your campuses with Covid cases, and hoping for the best!
Anne Soon Choi
32:31
CSUDH: We had a successful summer though our FDC. We had 60 folks make it through a ACUE micro credential course. We held a Faculty Learning Committee that focused on preparing faculty for teaching FALL 2021. We also have a redesigned website for the FDC. We are also launching a targeted QM recruitment with our health and human services college and the college of business

360 faculty at Fresno State participated in training Summer 2021 - QLT courses and Resilient Teaching. We are offering ACUE, QLT and HyFlex this semester. Numbers are probably half of what we usually have: https://www.fresnostate.edu/academics/cfe/

Yes faculty is overwhelm
Bryan Berrett - Fresno
37:02
Agree Chiara! Our faculty are not enrolling in 2021/22 opportunities.
Catherine Hillman
37:13
Lots of dropouts in our late summer workshops, so that resonates with Cal Poly SLO for sure
Mark Laumakis
37:21
We have VERY low attendance by faculty at training events being offered this Fall

CSUDH—Also we are currently planning for our first Teaching Institute this fall

SDSU• We ran yet another Flexible Course Design Institute (Flex CDI) in August• We enrolled 332 total instructors, including 274 returning participants and 58 new participants• Returning participants completed one week of training for $500 and new participants completed two weeks of training for $1,000• This training had a significantly lower completion rate (~80% vs. ~98%)• We continue to offer faculty support via the Virtual Faculty Instructional Technology (vFIT) Center, online via Zoom, in addition to in-person support• Focus going forward is on Canvas Outcomes tool and further refinement of the asynchronous Flex CDI Toolkit
Chiara Ferrari - Chico
38:08
And I do believe that faculty feel they lost opportunities and time last year so they want to focus on tenure and promotion
Rachael Jordan CSUCI (she/her)
38:31
^Also, lecturer faculty are exhausted. Our full time lecturers teach 5/5 loads
Afifa Alawi
38:42
About 150 faculty completed CSULB's Quality Essentials professional development program which is based on QM rubric's 43 standards.
Anne Soon Choi
38:46
We have had good turn out…but we have focused on concrete deliverables for people—ie…”prepare for your fall online class” Revise two assignments for your fall class” etc…
Mark Laumakis
39:00
faculty do what they are rewarded for, so it's not surprising to see them pivot back to research, as that really matters for tenure and promotion
Shradha Tibrewal, Stanislaus
39:36
We did have 29 faculty complete QLT 1 and 3 this summer and 80 faculty competed the ACUE certificate in May 2021. 80 faculty participated in our summer pedagogy series.
Rachael Jordan CSUCI (she/her)
40:02
To Anne's point: I think we were able to get so many faculty at CI to participate because we had them essentially build/plan/create assignments and content for their fall courses (plus gave them a stipend)

181 Faculty attended CSULB's Hyflex Instructional Techniques PD program at CSULB as well.
Janett Silvers (she/her)- CSUN
42:13
Northridge just finished the eLearning Summer Institute with lots of faculty doing a QLT self-review and a peer review with a QLT certified faculty mentor. Besides the Institute, we started offering training and support to our HyFlex pilot, and that will continue through this fall. CSUN is also piloting QLT course certification with 4 courses and we started this process in the summer and will move along this fall.We continue to infuse QLT to design and inform all programs offered by Faculty Development.

At CSULB, it seems that a good deal of training has now also devolved down to the college level. Seems to be no real coordination between ATS, FDC, and college level “training coordinators.”

@Shradha … do faculty get a stipend or PD funds for the faculty learning community?
Megan Eberhardt (she/her)
52:35
Would appreciate a presentation this term how you manage FLC’s. I’d appreciate seeing models from different campuses using this technique.
Shradha Tibrewal, Stanislaus

Scaling quality online course development - how to expand to thousands of courses
Shelli Wynants
01:11:06
@Catherine - CSUF is 65% f2f & ~10% hybrid, and we're on week 3. So far, low COVID cases reported on campus. Masks mandated indoors. There is still concern, but our campus does monthly forums with safety updates, and regular communication to campus.
