Yes, these points being made are all so affirming. Many of them remind me of what Carol Jago was suggesting in her book, Paper, Paper, Papers.
Chris Street
47:29
Papers, Papers, Papers
Garreth Heidt
48:13
Or many of the things Peter Elbow and Donald Graves wrote about in the 70s and 80s. Absolutely agree with @chris Street
Jennifer Fletcher
48:23
Papers, Papers, Papers is a great book!
Caterina Manser
48:51
Yes ... a great book!
Caterina Manser
50:53
I love this annotation idea!
char lindemulder
51:09
Yes, I’ve done this. It works so well!
Alyssa (ah-Lee-Suh) Shepherd Moore
52:24
But you had to teach emphasis, first right? Or what did you to to prepare them?
Kimberly
52:35
I love this too. I wonder what do you do if students don't know that their using parallelism or fragments?
Kimberly
52:54
they're...😕
Carol Jago
53:41
Thanks, my friends. Can always learn more!
Matthew Schneider
54:04
How cool that you are present, Carol!
Caterina Manser
54:48
Wow! Yes, very cool!
Jennifer Johnson
55:57
Grading contracts emphasize the feedback. Inoue as well as Peter Elbow offer excellent perspective.
Jennifer Johnson
57:51
I really appreciate your focus on the process of writing, drawing on our students’ funds of knowledge, and then sharing your scholar-driven feedback cycle.
Caterina Manser
58:26
I can’t wait to share this with my department when we meet tomorrow. I am suggesting summer professional reading ideas. This has kicked Matt’s book to the top of my suggestion pile.
Jennifer Fletcher
01:00:07
I’m thinking how helpful this cycle could be in supporting goal-setting in ERWC 3.0.
char lindemulder
01:00:08
Caterina, that’s a great idea!
Jennifer Johnson
01:00:19
Yes, Jennifer!
Gretchen Hoefer
01:01:20
What was Key #4?
char lindemulder
01:01:30
KEY 4: STOP USING FEEDBACK AS ASSESSMENTS
Jen Rizzo
01:01:39
Stop using feedback and assessments as synonyms
Gretchen Hoefer
01:01:56
Thank you!!!
Jen Rizzo
01:01:59

Chris Street
01:03:58
Yes, teaching writing is such a balancing act between balancing challenge and support. Students need us to hear them, respond to them, and propel them forward. But we also need to support them as developing writers by caring about them as individuals—and as writers!
char lindemulder
01:06:03
What was the first item that we need to do instead?
Paige Greco
01:06:09
This is the most useful, actionable PD I’ve been to in an age!
Mrs. LeClair (she/her)
01:06:33
Separate feedback and assessments
char lindemulder
01:06:50
Thanks!
Gretchen Hoefer
01:07:07
Did he refer at all to a rubric?
lois_clark
01:07:38
Students need to be well grounded in assessing themselves.
Caterina Manser
01:07:48
What great practice on speaking and listening as well as writing! They learn to justify and support their thinking in the moment.
Emily Sommer
01:08:00
Rubric is co-constructed with the students.
Angela Ali
01:09:32
Peer Review on Turnitin.com works well as it compels students to offer and receive feedback.
Jeffery Frieden
01:09:55
@Gretchen, the rubrics referenced in Matthew Johnson’s book are more like checklists, single point. Less is more with writing assessment.
Gretchen Hoefer
01:11:22
Thanks, Jeffery!
Caterina Manser
01:12:40
Dave Stuart’s blog and book are awesome!

Talk and Comment is a Chrome extension that doesn’t have a time limit, although I don’t think it will transcribe or translate
Caterina Manser

Kristen (she/her)
01:19:52
What was the 3rd Key shift?
Jennifer Johnson
01:20:03
I love the co-generated rubrics and the way in which you are emphasizing meta-awareness of these “assessments”.
Leah Nunes
01:20:13
What do you have the other students do during class time if you're doing one-on-one conferences with individual students?
Trudy Pellizzari
01:20:15
Thoroughly enjoyed this; I can’t wait to discuss with our Regional ERWC teaching team. I think we need to spend more time discussing this, especially in the intro course.
Jim Jordan
01:20:16
Unlimited revision: YES!
Jeffery Frieden
01:20:21
For ERWC teachers, everything Matthew is presenting a more rhetorical approach to writing assessment (which heavily involves metacognition).

Thank you!
Jennifer Johnson
01:22:35
Thank you!
Garreth Heidt
01:22:37
@Laura, you’re right. It won’t transcribe, but you can run the “Voice to Text” tool in the Google Doc toolbar and Talk and Comment at the same time and it will do a yeoman’s job of providing transcription and you’ll have the both the outputs.
