Kim Norman: Math, Fullerton

I did well on the survey, but I am honestly pretty clueless about how to use Google Apps so I hope to learn a lot today!
Cheng Chen

Great turnout today, thanks!
JP Bayard, CSU ATS
24:38
everyone is charged up for the new term!
Brett Christie
24:40
dollar ninety-nine
Jeremy Warner
26:04
in gsuite, you can set it where only the admin is the one that can delete, which is usually the best bet and then to put a delete folder for docs to be reviewed to be deleted
Joseph Ross
26:25
Good workaround Jeremy - thanks!
Jeremy Warner
26:26
delete in team drives that is.
Brett Christie
26:33
Revision/version history is great with team projects, policing students in group projects (who really did what!)
Brett Christie
28:25
Less and less excuses (-;
Joseph Ross
28:39
Available offline is critical for me when I’m traveling - can view/review/grade PDF files while flying, e.g.
Brett Christie
29:22
Good point regarding Chrome as preferred.
Adam Sanford
29:48
I’ve found that the ability to collaboratively edit a document is incredibly helpful for students.
Joseph Ross
30:08
goo.gl also generates QR codes! when you get your custom shortened URL, paste that URL into a web browser and add “.qr” to the end of the goo.gl URL, and the browser brings up your QR code!
Brett Christie
30:28
We have 49 attendees…whew

mary paul
33:13
Mary: I love how Google Drive is now automatically incorporated into our library research
Sheela @ DH
33:32
I always have trouble logging into my google account - as a result I don't use it unless absolutely necessary.
Danielle Hidalgo
33:51
yes
Ida Jones
33:52
yep
Shirley Yap
33:59
Anonymous Tiger wants to know if Google Docs supports math symbols yet. I’ve been waiting for that ...
Brett Christie
34:44
@Shirley: Good question. Let’s try to address…probably Mary
Bobbi Makani
34:46
Yes, you can type in Equations..
Shirley Yap
34:58
Thanks anonymous kangaroo. I see your Auto-Latex Add-on.
Bobbi Makani
35:08
Click on "Insert" and you'll see "Equations" on the drop-down menue
Stacey Anderson
35:23
Cool about voice typing! I use G suite constantly but did not know about that.
Brett Christie
36:36
As you can see, you can go very deep with Google Docs these days. It continues to progress where there is little that Word does which Docs doesn’t
Brett Christie
38:37
How is 365 with mobile integration, ease of use?
Brett Christie
39:05
.
Adam Sanford
39:36
Mary, you’re muted, and we can’t hear you.
Brett Christie
40:10
Most of our students these days have already used google apps/drive/suite extensively in K-12 so adapt pretty easily. In my experience…
Bobbi Makani
40:46
I agree, Brett. Freshmen are already so adept at using Google apps.
Brett Christie
41:22
Need @Dennis Dahlquist to log in with another device so we can reach 50 participants!
Shirley Yap
41:23
Love the interactive syllabus idea
Kim Norman: Math, Fullerton
41:28
That's really cool
Bobbi Makani
41:50
365 is also available on a host of mobile devices. Great for laptops and tablets - not so with phones
Joseph Ross
41:51
I use Google Docs/syllabus to let students “register” for giving in-class presentations on the “course schedule” part of my syllabus
Brett Christie
42:12
Great idea Joe!
Brett Christie
42:29
Some use for “ticket to enter” for flipped classes.
Kim Norman: Math, Fullerton
42:32
I just don't know how to share with my students. I tried once last semester, but it kept asking them for log in information
Adam Sanford
42:46
I use Google Forms to get student responses in class, usually after structured activities.
Shirley Yap
43:33
@Adam. Do they use their phones or computers to fill int he Google Forms ?
Adam Sanford
45:54
So this is like creating a module system linked from a google doc?
Brett Christie
46:05
https://goo.gl/fdSFuM
Adam Sanford
46:13
Shirley: I encourage using their computers, but it can be done from their phones if necessary.
Yuhfen Lin
46:39
Should we put in the things we already using goole docs already?
Paul Nissenson
48:14
This document doubles as an attendance sheet for today's meeting
Kim Norman: Math, Fullerton
50:53
Is there a good tute out there for how to get started? I have lots of ideas but I don't know how to actually make it happen
Danielle Hidalgo
51:16
I use Google sheets for my monthly budget
Adam Sanford
51:16
If anyone asked me a question I got kicked off for a few minutes. :(
Danielle Hidalgo
51:20
It’s great!
Danielle Hidalgo
51:27
And I can use it on my smartphone too
Adam Sanford
51:36
I’ve considered using Google Sheets for my gradebooks, but I’m concerned about FERPA issues.
Brett Christie
52:46
Not great when JP brings chicken feet
Shirley Yap
52:51
I’d be ok with 10 dishes of lasagna
Brett Christie
53:01
Oh no, time to clean!!
Kim Norman: Math, Fullerton
53:15
Address please hahaha
Shirley Yap
53:25
Does this do everything that SurveyMonkey does?
Adam Sanford
53:49
No, it doesn’t do everything SurveyMonkey does, but it does enough for quick-and-dirty data collection.
Brett Christie
54:17
@Shirley: I wouldn’t say it does everything but probably close to or as much as cheapest version of SurveyMonkey.
Brett Christie
54:57
Google Forms continues to quietly evolve in the background. Most people don’t know or notice because they keep it clean and simple looking still.
Adam Sanford
55:00
I’ve used Google Forms for my students to respond to in-class activities. It allows anonymity, which means they’re not as afraid of making mistakes.
Adam Sanford
55:59
I also use Google Forms for things like syllabus agreement contracts.
Brett Christie
57:06
You can also easily grab the embed code
Bobbi Makani
57:11
https://goo.gl/forms/byvULdOIgpi9IGLW2
Yuhfen Lin
57:25
We need permission.
Adam Sanford
57:29
“You need permissionThis form can only be viewed by users in the owner's organization.Try contacting the owner of the form if you think this is a mistake. Learn More.”
JP Bayard, CSU ATS
57:30

Brett Christie
58:50
Volunteered JP for salad!
JP Bayard, CSU ATS
58:59
No!
Adam Sanford
59:03
Yep. The spreadsheet is what I show students after I collect their in-class forms, so that they can compare their answers to the answers from other students.
Shirley Yap
59:14
Can you show us how to access that excel spreadsheet that recorded the data?
Joseph Ross
59:34
Would love to see how to manage multiple simultaneous forms (if possible)
Brett Christie
59:47
@Shirley: See the green grid icon at the top of Bobbi’s share?
Shirley Yap
01:00:01
I see it. cool.
Astha Sen
01:00:40
great!!
Astha Sen
01:00:43
thank you
Mo Yahdi
01:02:05
Can you download an intereactive copy of the responses, especially when the questions are in a chart format that does not fit on the page and one needs to slide the table to see all columns?
Brett Christie
01:03:26
Many features of Google Forms that did not get shown due to time. Definitely worth exploring further, either on your own or with your cohort!
Barbara Gonzalez
01:04:51
Is it possible to use special symbols for chemistry and math symbols in Google Forms for quiz purposes?
Brett Christie
01:05:32
That first question is a sensitive one!
Brett Christie
01:06:14
Great end of year reporting!
Adam Sanford
01:08:19
This is a great idea for groups. I will be integrating this into my classes that have group presentations.
Tianqin Kelly Shi_SJSU
01:08:32
how do you share the google doc link during the class?
Yuhfen Lin
01:09:04
I do group contracts. I do ask students to all sign the contracts so they are committed to it.
Stacey Anderson
01:09:30
I think you have to share the results sheet separately with a collaborator
Brett Christie
01:09:42

Yuhfen Lin
01:09:45
If I share the google doc in class, I would make a tiny url for them to use.
Tianqin Kelly Shi_SJSU
01:10:18
thank you, Yuhfen Lin!
