Huesera: The Bone Woman - Meet the Director!

Join us for a filmmaker webinar with director Michelle Garza Cervera. Her critically acclaimed debut film "Huesera: The Bone Woman" has been a festival darling since it premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival where it won both the Best New Narrative Director and Nora Ephron awards. Cervera will discuss what it takes to bring a film to life, how to hone your craft as a director, how film distribution works, and give advice to up-and-coming filmmakers.

The conversation will be moderated by Professor Aaron Kerner (SFSU) and students will be invited to ask their own questions as well! "Huesera: The Bone Woman" arrives in select theaters Feb. 10 and on VOD Feb. 16 from XYZ Films.

She was awarded a Chevening scholarship to study in the United Kingdom, where she completed an M.F.A in Film Directing at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her debut feature, HUESERA: THE BONE WOMAN, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival 2022, where it won the Best New Narrative Director and the Nora Ephron awards, and has continued to collect over 30 accolades from international film festivals around the world, including the Sitges Film Festival’s Citizen Kane Award for Best New Director and the Blood Window Award for the Best Ibero-American film. She is in currently in pre-production of her second feature film project, PALIZADA, with the production company Piano (Annette, Triangle of Sadness). Aaron Kerner (Professor + Director of the School of Cinema @San Francisco State University) Aaron Kerner is the Director of the School of Cinema at San Francisco State University. He has published among other things: "Extreme Cinema" (Edinburgh University Press, 2016), and "Theorizing Stupid Media" (Palgrave/MacMillan, 2019). His forthcoming book "Abject Pleasures" (EUP), focuses on cinematic material that despite its abject content has the capacity to elicit pleasurable affects—the beautiful, sexual arousal, laughter.
